Mechanical
Whittaker can design and build from a concept or improve an existing design. Our mechanical designs are based on firm principles and from past experience - the mechanism can be new but the details will be tried and tested. We will, if possible, test our own designs to destruction to spot the weakest link and to see just how far we can overload it before it breaks.
FPSO Turret Turning Gripper Design (used on 3 FPSO's in the North Sea)
There are different types of FPSO designs in the world. We offer an improved design for turrets which are turned by grippers and jacking cylinders.
To replace existing grippers with a mechanism which is strong and reliable but does not damage the gripper rail.
The rail is extremely difficult and expensive to repair while the F.P.S.O. is on station. Our grippers offer the following advantages -
* They require low operating gripping pressure, typically less than 150 bar.
* The use of wheels to traverse the unclamped gripper around the rail so keeping the gripping surfaces off the rail.
* The use of replaceable gripper piston liners and compliant, reliable piston seals.
* One-piece piston block (including lugs) for a strong weld free assembly.
* High yield steel top and bottom plates for strength and fatigue resistance.
* Belleville Spring retracts the clamp plate which does away with the necessity for hydraulic retract pistons and controls.
* Improved and rust free swivel bearings on jacking cylinders.
5-Function ROV Manipulator
Designed, built and tested by Whittaker. For more information please view the M5 ROV Manipulator page.
Hydrostatic Release Mechanism
This subsea data gathering device was designed to be released acoustically but with a hydrostatic release safety override. The mechanism could release up to +/- 15 degrees without difficulty.
